Artist's statement:
My paintings do not occur naturally--I have to seek them out. Typically, I start with a specific house and a specific tree. Something about the relationship intrigues me, but it's never obvious, so I draw the scene, over and over and over. Success is seldom a Eureka! moment--a sudden, total validation of what I saw and have finally depicted. Rather it comes gradually, almost grudgingly. The colors come later, a happy afterthought--a drapery. The drawing's the thing.
